Your Job Shouldnt Be Making You Miserable 2 Other Secrets I Really Need to Tell You - When I Grow Up
Your Job Shouldnt Be Making You Miserable 2 Other Secrets I Really Need to Tell You - When I Grow Up I really have to tell you something. Its super important to me. It might be a secret to you, which is why its something I really need you to hear. Can you go to a quiet space to read this, actually? Turn off the headphones. Shut the door to your office. Go to the restroom and read it in the stall. Just. Get. Quiet. Now, picture me whispering in your ear and hear me say in a hushed, urgent, pleading voice: Your job should not be making you miserable. Adulting is not about doing things you dislike. Going through the motions. Putting up with disrespectful people. Sucking up your values, your goals, your dreams and your unique talents for a paycheck. Every day does not have to feel the same, with the same uncomfortable clothes and the same inauthentic work. Your future does not have to be decided for you, at the helm of other people and with a trajectory that youre not at all looking forward to. Your feelings do not have to be overwhelmingly negative for the vast majority of your week, with a short respite from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Your health does not have to be at stake, with higher-than-normal stress levels and physical pain (even if its psychosomatic, like mine was when I worked for a verbally abusive boss). Your relationships do not have to suffer, since your loving family and trusted friends dont know what else to say to help you, and you dont talk about much other than to complain about work. Your career does not need to be based around a skill set you dont enjoy using and an education the 18-year-old you decided to get. Almost as important to tell you, though, is what Ive found to be true. Take a deep breath and hear me whisper just as urgently, just as pleading: You CAN make a grown-up living doing the work you enjoy with the people you choose. Can you just close your eyes for a moment and let that sit? Please, please actually do it. Youre in a quiet space already. Even if its not private, nobody is looking. Read that line again, close your eyes, and just breathe. When the breath has left your body, when your eyes are open, I need you to know my truth and the truth of so many of my clients and friendleagues (those are my colleagues who are also my friends). Being an adult is about the ability to make your own choices, and you can choose how you spend your time and who you spend it with. Each day can feel like a new gift, and you can live your life without a countdown to the weekend. Your future will be there no matter what, and you can decide to meet it by making a change now and securing your happiness then. Your feelings can be overwhelmingly positive when you tap into the work you can do that makes you feel valued, helpful, authentic and free. Your health is something you can transform by simply coming back to who you are and what you enjoy doing. Your relationships can flourish by making a pro-active commitment to make a career transition, and then taking baby steps each and every day to make it happen. You can absolutely make more money doing work that you love, that youve built yourself, than any of job youve had. It wont happen overnight, but it can happen. Its not the traditional trajectory of our adult lives, but I know youre not a traditional person. Youre about to feel strong, and ballsy, and in control. But now? Now, I hope you feel ready. Because the third secret I need to implore is this one: All you need to be to make a successful career change is READY. The courage? It comes later, after youve had the clarity and did the work on the action plan and can see that marked-off To Do list with your eyes open wide in pride and disbelief. The confidence? It comes later than that, when youve consistently shown up and done the work successfully for a handful of people or more. Youll hear that consistent, positive feedback and youll read their testimonials and youll slowly realize with your eyes open wide in pride and disbelief that You Actually Know What Youre Doing. The trust? It comes even later, when youve been working in your dream career for a couple years. Only then will you stop holding your breath, knowing that showing up to do your work and continuing to follow your plan will allow people to show up and sign up. Theres trust that you did what was best for you, and that the work youre doing is making a difference, and that more of your people will find you. And yes, even then, youll still have your eyes open wide in pride and disbelief. You actually did what most people dont dare even dream of. You chose to take control and not leave the next however-many-years-you-have-until-retirement in the hands of other people. You chose to commit to feeling happy and authentic seven days of each week instead of two. You chose the path less taken, the road rarely traveled Are you ready to Be Ready? Then youre ready to start.

This is How Much Money You Need to Feel Rich Rich, According to Report
This is How Much Money You Need to Feel Rich Rich, According to Report One of the most challenging questions for successful professionals to answer has to be how much money is enough money?Everyones concept of wealth differs based on their personal backgrounds, the norms for their region and their career paths, and their spending habits. In 2017, a panel of wealth experts famously positedthat $75,000/year represents the peak income for happiness. But if you were to ask actual rich people how much money they require for a satisfying life, do they respond with a higher number? As it turns out yes, absolutely.Town Country writer Norman Vanamee recently asked a group of multi1000000aires to weigh in on a hypothetical situation if youre a wealthy 40-something couple living on Fifth Avenue in New York City with 2 teenage children who attend private school, how much money would you need to keep up a wealthy lifestyle (defined as providing your kids with their educations, hiring a household staff, maintaining vacation homes, and leaving your children with inheritances of $25 million each)? According to Vanamees findings, that number is a whopping $190 million.Of course, this happiness number for wealthy individuals isnt a universally-accepted standard.New York Observer columnist Richard Kirshenbaum asked a group of billionaires to name the amount theyd need in their bank accounts to feel wealthy, and the average sum clocked in at $100 million.Obviously, the wealth standards held by multimillionaires and billionaires have little bearing on the average Americans idea of what amount of money makes someone rich. Also, a related New York Times article recently made the point that even the objectively wealthy feel anxiety over their assets multimillionaire Thomas Gallagher told the Times that emotionally, I dont come from money I got very lucky on Wall Street. Ive been dealing with a myriad of psychological issues since I retired. I have more money than I had ever imagined, but I still worry do I have enough, if I live longer than I thought? And yes, hearing comments like this makes the rest of us want to break out our tiniest violins but the point remains valid. Everyone feels some level of concern about their personal net worth, even those in the top income bracket.

Rumination How obsessive thinking impacts depression and anxiety
Rumination How obsessive thinking impacts depression and anxietyRumination How obsessive thinking impacts depression and anxietySome people knowrumination- the repetition of the same thought in your head over and over - asobsessive thinking, and for those who experience it, ruminating can be a frustrating state.Thinking over and over about a missed opportunity, an ex, or when you misspoke - its bad enough to live through a negative experience once without beating yourself up in an unvirtuous mental loop. While it can often be beneficial to allow yourself the time and space to think about things that are important, too much of a good thing might actually be a bad thing. And when it comes to dealing with issues like depression or anxiety, allowing too much time to ruminate could keep you stuck in a mental rut.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraRumination is associated with depress ion, writes clinical psychologist Dr. Suma Chand for theAnxiety and Depression Association of America. Research shows that people who ruminate are more likely to develop depression compared to those who dont. Maybe up to four times more likely, she says. This goes the otzu sich way as well ACanadian studyconducted among college students found that those who experienced higher levels of anxiety or depression already tended to engage in more ruminative behaviors. Anotherstudy in Chinafound similar results among the elderly population. Rumination, it turns out, becomes a vicious double-edged sword. What Does Rumination Look Like?Everyone at one time or another may feel like theyre obsessing over some idea or thought. The difference between a healthy amount of thinking about a topic, versus harmful rumination, is the end result. For example, if you find yourself thinking about a particular problem in order to come up with the best solution, youre probably not ruminating. But if the thing on your mind has no solution, or may not be in your control, then you might want to ask yourself if youre ruminating.Depending on whether youre experiencing depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, rumination can take varying forms. One of my clients describes her anxious worrying as catastrophic thoughts. She often begins with a fairly benign thought, such as This traffic is going to make me late to work. This becomes Im a horrible employee who cant even show up on time, which turns into Im definitely going to get fired from my job. For the rest of the week shes sweating over a small, common mistake that wasnt her fault. One of the things I find hard to articulate to people is that if I keep bringing something up or making jokes about it, thats an indication Im ruminating about it, writes Alexis Schuster forThe Mighty. Im guilty of the same tell in my own ruminations. I find all sorts of creative ways to discuss the thing I cant stop thinking about, from joking about it to asking rhetorical questions to asking others if theyve ever had similar thoughts.ThenI start obsessing over whether Im annoying everyone with my ruminations. It can feel lonely to be stuck in your head with your thoughts sometimes letting them out is the only way to feel like youre releasing the tension thats building, to feel like youre not the only one bearing the heavy load. However, once you let out some of the steam, its likely going to build up again. Thats when its time for a better solution. How to Keep Rumination at BayRumination can be a problem because it rarely offers new insights or solutions on how to handle a situation, Jodee Virgo writes forThe Everygirl. Instead it emotionally hijacks us and intensifies our negative feelings, essentially, making us prisoners to our own thoughts, she continues.Even if you tend to get stuck in a cycle of rumination, youre not doomed to ruminate forever There are luckily a number of ways to prevent or stop rumination. First, simple th ings like mindfulness, or paying attention to the here-and-now, keeps your mind present and free of repetitive preoccupations. To start being more mindful,Talkspace therapist Dr. Ben Epsteinrecommends regular yoga or meditation, which can be practiced from the comfort of your home.Second, you may want to examine your thought patterns - are these thoughts based in reality, or are theycognitive distortions? Are you ruminating on something thats out of your control? If so, think about whether dwelling on it is helping the matter or whether its just keeping you worked up. Even if your rumination is based in reality, think about the worst that could happen. Could you handle that scenario? I bet you could. You can alsoschedule your anxiety- give yourself a few minutes to worry and ruminate. When times up, itstime to move on.Finally, if rumination is impacting your ability to function, or harming your quality of life, talking to a therapistcan give you an objective point of view and guidey ou towards a calmer, less worried mind.
